From Khalessi to catwalk, Emilia Clarke has undoubtedly become a household name and one of the most desired women in the world, during the last three years, largely due to her role in the HBO smash hit Game of Thrones. Emilia plays the role of Daenerys Stormborn, the last remaining in her Targaryen blood-line. A strong character in the show, Emilia also brings the title of ’empowered woman’ to real life and is slowly but surely taking the industry by storm, with her role as Sarah Connor in the 2015 film ‘Terminator: Genesis’ being highly anticipated. A little known fact, however, is that Clarke was not the original Mother of Dragons. In fact, Tamzin Merchant from ‘The Tudors’ was first cast into the role. Thankfully for Game of Thrones fans worldwide, Emilia soon replaced Merchant allowing all of us to witness the perfect portrayal of the ice-blonde beauty.
Clarke’s talented performances on GOT are not the only reason why she is in the spotlight, however, with her natural beauty, ‘English Rose’ status and infectious personality drawing people in from all around the world. With this many eyes on her it was only a matter of time that the starlet’s fashion comes under scrutiny and here I will show you some of my favourite Emilia Clarke looks over the past few years.
Firstly, we’re going to kick things off with Emilia in a stunning white Chanel dress embellished with purple sequins which allures with a futuristic vibe. Paired with simple pulled back hair and barely-there make-up, this look shows that Emilia is not afraid to take risks and certainly set my interest alight:
Wearing Chanel at the 2012 Emmy Awards:
Los Angeles Premier of GOT Season 3 in Victoria Beckham:
Here we have Emilia in an amazing pastel blue, strapless Victoria Beckham gown which fits to perfection. She dons this gown with attitude and shows us just how sexy she can be with smouldering smokey eyes.
2013 Emmys in Donna Karan:
Next, Emilia returns to her former Emmy glory and fails to disappoint in a gorgeous white Donna Karan Altier dress with a silver belt at the waist and an ever-so-pretty ruffle effect down the front of the garb.
Zac by Zac Posen:
This next dress solidifies Emilia’s status as a fashion darling. Here she owns it in a custom-made, V-shaped, chiffon, Zac Posen gown paired with emerald earrings and beautifully swept over hair. This is utterly sensational.
Christian Dior at the 2013 Actor’s Fund Gala:
Finally, we have Emilia in this edgy, Christion Dior piece. Although this picture isn’t the best quality, you can see the intricately placed embellishments shine in all their glory on the black, strapless gown. This is yet another look which highlights Emilia’s natural beauty whilst leaving the dress do the talking, something which the starlet pulls off perfectly.
Unfortunately for Emilia, however, not every look that she wore has been a smash with some disappointments scattered along the way. And even more unfortunately for Ms. Clarke, I’m going to show you some of them right here. Although she usually gets it right, I have found that the few times when she misses the mark are mainly due to the shape and/or length of her garments. At 5′ 2″, Emilia is an actress with petite proportions meaning that unless dresses are perfectly tailored they can often swamp her. Between ill-fitted gowns and unflattering hem lengths (along with the odd dress which just isn’t to my fancy) here are some of Emilia’s least appealing looks:
Clarke exhibiting some ill-fitting gowns:
Here she dons a dress which does nothing for her figure, is far from fashionable and is accompanied with lack-luster hair:
An almost-there Calvin Klein look:
Although Emilia looks stunning in the above Calvin Klein gown, I have put this in her bad looks category for some constructive criticism. This look could have been a massive hit, and almost is, but for the length of the sheer over-panel and the clunkiness of her shoes. This is one of those oh-so-near outfits which shows you that the difference between not quite there and excellence can be down to the tiniest of details.
Finally, an overall horrible red carpet look:
The combination of atrocities in this look leads to huge disappointment on my behalf. Emilia is wearing a mustard Vivienne Westwood dress which does absolutely nothing for her porcelain skin-tone. This, combined with a horrible hair-style, a bad length and ugly accessories leads to this look being a fashion failure for the starlet.
Finally, although this outfit is not a Red Carpet look it is one of the best day-time looks that I have seen in a long, long time. Dressed in Altuzarra, Emilia is effortlessness personified in this chic, enticing, easy-going outfit:
Overall, from researching and judging Emilia on her style, I think that she is definitely a star to watch. Although this is the case, she does have some serious room for improvement. Where the star falls short is due to the aforementioned bad fits and also due to the age in which she dresses. Clarke has a tendency to dress much older than her mere twenty-six years and dons garments which are far too mature. She needs to realise that she is young and sexy and that she can still pull of a classic look whilst retaining her youth. She does this beautifully in looks such as the stunning white and purple Chanel dress above, but often tends to forget how young she is and wear dresses which could be seen on women twice her age (and hem-lines which are probably twice as long)! In a nut shell, Clarke is beautiful, she is chic and she has style, she just needs to remember what age she is and that she is still a newcomer on the fashion scene, thus has plenty of time to grow-up. She should embrace her youthful looks and take more fashion risks.
So there you have it, my take on Emilia Clarke’s red carpet style and where I think she could improve.
