Best Dressed | The Met Gala 2016 – Manus vs Machina

My favourite red carpet occasion of the year raised its stunning head and left us with a vast array of fashion at our finger tips.

The Met Gala is Anna Wintour’s night to shine and with an outlandish theme it always allows fashion’s bravest to push the boundaries and test their creative prowess. Let me begin this post by stating my 2 non-disputable rules for Met Ball attendees:

Rules for the Met Ball:

1) If you are going to attend the Met Gala then you follow the theme!

I don’t care who you are or what you do. If you are forking out thousands of dollars for a ticket to attend a fashion exhibition then you owe it to the event to at least abide by the rules. Just as important to remember is that that includes pushing yourself. Wearing a simple metallic dress does not meet my standards of following the theme… If I see you in a plain silver dress for a Manus vs. Machina theme – next!

2) If you do abstain from the theme then your outfit needs to be perfect.

If you are going to irritate spectators and be brazen enough to turn your back on the wondrous theme, that I’m sure has been painstakingly chosen for you, then you at the very least need to make sure that your off-beat outfit is absolutely flawless. If not, then why be awkward in the first place? If you’re not going to follow the theme and you wear a boring outfit then you might as well have stayed at home. This is a fashion event, darling.

That being said, the majority of stars and fashionistas alike did me proud this year and I was more than pleasantly surprised when scrolling through Vogue, Elle and Vanity Fair online (where the pictures in this post were sourced from). Thus, let’s get into it.

Emmys 2015 – Worst of The Night.

So unlike my prior post on the fashion seen at this year’s Emmys, this post might have just a tad bit of negativity thrown into the mix!

As always, we expect to see the good bad and in-between at all award shows and boy oh boy did the Emmys not disappoint. For all of the dazzling beauts of the evening have a look here at my Best Dressed post, but for some horrendous looks, some of which will curl your toes, then continue on and scroll to find the horror below.

Let’s kick things off with the worst of the worst…

Heidi Klum in Versace dress and shoes with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery:

rs_634x1024-150920150302-634.heidi-klum-emmy-awards-2015-092015

Where on earth did this canary yellow disaster pop out of?! Heidi is a stunning supermodel with beauty and brains to boot and then she comes out looking like someone made her dress out of some very distressed canaries – this is an absolute disaster. Although it still wouldn’t have been nice, she could have at least taken off that God awful sleeve and lapel combination, I mean it’s not like she trying to cover anything up! From shoulders to toes this is a horrendous and tacky ensemble. Genuinely all that I can think of is that if I was a canary I’d rather be in a coal mine than be associated with this dress. One positive: at least this wasn’t designed by any of her Project Runway designers because that would have been the start and end of their career in one foul swoop! Heidi… get a stylist!

GettyImages-489358476_master.nocrop.w445.h670

Dascha Polanco:

Dascha Polanco

Following on from our supermodel in distress we have Dascha Polance from Orange Is The New Black. Dascha is a beautiful, curvy woman, but here she is doing herself zero favours. Although the voluptuous form isn’t your usual Hollywood stereotype, you can make the best of your body no matter what shape or size you are and unfortunately, that is exactly the opposite of what Dascha is doing. That sheer skirt and slit just isn’t pretty. The dress as a whole is boring and not that cute, but if Dascha had just lowered the slit a few inches (maybe like 8…) then this would flatter her so  much better. This just isn’t good.

Kathryn Hahn in Vivienne Westwood with Eva Fehren jewels:

Kathryn Hayn

I hate to be mean, but Kathryn’s dress is hideous! This macabre frock is genuinely one of the worst things I have laid my eyes upon. I would say that perhaps this would look good on a model or someone, but being honest, I can’t find any good qualities about it. It looks like someone found two pairs of their nanna’s old curtains, sowed them together, threw on some make-up and hoped that no one would notice… #DIYCinderella!

Julianne Hough in Marchesa with a Jimmy Choo clutch:

slide_453162_6073776_compressed

Julianne looks like a modern day wicked witch of the west gone wrong in this ensemble. This dress just is not nice on her and 100% is not for an occasion like this. The sad thing is that I do think that the dress could be stunning on someone with model proportions to a different event though (I know I’m obsessed with her, but Sophie Turner perhaps?). One saving glory for Julianne is that although that head-band sucks, her hair is cute from the back!

Julianne-Hough

Amy Schumer in Zac Posen:

slide_453162_6074182_compressed

Fair play to Amy for her amazing Emmy win, but this look was certainly not worthy. Like Dascha, Amy has some curves, but apparently doesn’t know how to use them. I find this look very surprising because even though Zac Posen isn’t always my favourite designer, he usually sculpts beautifully to the body – something which he didn’t quite get here. This gown hugs Amy in all the wrong places, her hair looks like she just had sex in the limo before hopping out and I can just tell that she had to keep pulling it up at her chest region all night.

slide_453136_6072772_compressed

Danielle Brooks:

slide_453142_6072632_compressed

Looking more parrot than canary, it seems like Danielle Brook and Heidi Klum were birds of a feather at last night’s Emmys. Tropical bird puns aside, Danielle certainly wasn’t looking too tasty on the night (sometimes I just can’t help myself). This dress was too tight on the thighs and adding extra fabric to a larger woman is never a good idea. Even twirling couldn’t help her case… next!

150920192703-37-emmys-red-carpet-super-169

Christine Marzano:

This woman is absolutely stunning, but there is no excuse for this dress. Obviously trying to make a name for herself, Marzano walked the carpet in this next to nothing attire. Now, I am never one for this as I just think that it’s tacky, but asides from that, there are literally children at this event and you rock up practically naked – really Christine? If I was on the Emmy committee I wouldn’t have let her in – it’s not like she’s important anyway…

Next we have 3 dresses which, although I don’t like anyway, are here for their terrible fabric choices. This fabric should never be seen on a red carpet:

Elizabeth Moss in Oscar de la Renta:

150920201623-70-emmys-red-carpet-super-169

Uzo Aduba in Jonathan Cohen:

150920200126-62-emmys-red-carpet-super-169

I don’t even know who this woman is…

150920192748-41-emmys-red-carpet-super-169

Carice Van Houten:

Carice Van Houten

Judging from this look, I think that maybe the red lady should stick to her colour. Carice is a beautiful woman and has killed it on the red carpet before, but unfortunately here she just isn’t looking her best. This colour washes her out, it doesn’t fit nicely and when you look at it closely, parts of the dress even look unfinished! For someone who has see in the future she really should have seen this one coming. Not a good look for her at all.

Emma Myles:

GettyImages-489365458_master.nocrop.w445.h670

Her hair and make-up are pretty, but I honestly can’t even begin to comment on the dress… This are so many things wrong with it that there’s no point in even trying!

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Oscar de la Renta:

Maggie Gyllenhal

A bad night for the Oscar de la Renta brand, this is yet another dress designed with horrific fabric. Maggie is accustomed to donning garments with her own off-beat personal style and I completely encourage that, but not with this fabric. What is up with everyone picking these crinkly, unflattering textiles?

Alan Cumming:

Alan Cumming

The worst male of the night, Alan came with enough spare fabric for a whole other suit! I’m wondering if he’s ever come across the world ‘tailoring’? Quirky tie and pants aside, the weather at the Emmys yesterday was beautiful and really warm, which begs the question – why on earth is he wearing crocs and holding an umbrella?!

Julie Klausner:

Julie Klausner

If January Jones showed us all how to rock a green jumpsuit, Julie Klausner has shown us exactly how not. The general theme of this post so far, Julie is wearing something with both bad fit and bad fabric. This jumpsuit makes Julie look much bigger than she is and then her hair just looks like she’s going to the shop to buy dinner. Overall, this is not a good look and the sleeves don’t certainly don’t help.

Tracee Ellis Ross and Jane Krakowski:

Neithr Tracee nor Jane chose the right looks this time round. Both stars are wearing gowns which are uncomfortably tight to the extent that they can’t even stand how they normally do. Tracee’s is sucking her in in the torso and flattening her chest while Jane’s just looks uncomfortable all round.

Helen McCrory:

Helen McCrory

I’m sorry Helen, but you’re at a celebrity award ceremony, I don’t care if it’s sunny – take off the God damn glasses. Oh, and your dress isn’t nice either.

Chelsea Peretti in Gabriela Cadena:

Chelsea Perretti

Finishing off our fashion failures is Chelsea Peretti in a gown which just isn’t right. I don’t particularly like this dress anyway, but asides from that it just doesn’t suit her, and you can tell by her face that she thinks the same thing! At the end of the day, you can get the most stunning dress in all of existence, but if it doesn’t suit you then I’m afraid you just need to let it be and that’s what Chelsea should have done here. Two positives though – her leg looks amazing and I really like her shoes too!

Well that’s that folks! If you made it to the end of this post then congratulations because I’m sure you’re as tired as I am after looking at all of those looks 😛

Emmys 2015 – Best Fashion of The Night.

150920200134-63-emmys-red-carpet-super-169

Last night brought about one of my favourite nights in the celebrity fashion calendar, namely the highly anticipated Emmys.

For those of you who don’t know, The Emmys is essentially the Oscars of the television world and in true Emmy fashion, all of America’s TV’s biggest stars arrived. From gowns to cocktail dresses and jumpsuits to just plain old suits, there was a variety of styles sported on the night and it certainly lead to a feast for the eyes.

Admittedly, I love posting about the worst looks of the night (it allows me to unleash the inner bitch in me), but as I haven’t posted in a while I thought that it’d be better to start things off on a positive note. So without further adieu, let’s scroll through and see the most stunning and successful looks of the 2015 Emmys Red Carpet.

Sarah Hyland in Zac Posen with Ofira Rings:

rs_634x1024-150920150421-634.sarah-hyland-2.cm.92015

Flourishing, Sarah made her stamp both in fashion and on the red carpet at last year’s Emmys, and this year she has furthered her reign, triumphing as queen of the Emmys. Differing from last year’s Christian Siriano ensemble, Sarah has gone for a much more mature aesthetic this time round and boy did she knock it out of the park. The simple yet chic Zac Posen creation fits the star like a glove and that neckline is just to die for. What I really love about the look however, is that she kept it young and fresh by placing her bracelet so far up her arm – and those Lorraine Schwartz earrings are just stunning. Her stylist needs a raise!

Sarah-Hyland

Claire Danes in Prada with Cartier jewels and a Tyler Alexandra clutch:

rs_634x1024-150920163332-634.Claire-Danes-Hugh-Dancy-Emmys.ms.092015

Although not always the cream of the crop, Claire has certainly hit the nail on the head for me here. This almost nautical inspired gown is chic and sexy whilst adding a flare of youth into Claire’s style portfolio. Perfect for her boyish figure, this dress is made all the more eye-catching by the thick chains and beautiful embellishment and like Sarah above, she finished the look off perfectly, with minimal accessories being the key in this case.

rs_634x1024-150920163219-634.claire-danes-emmy-awards-2015-092015

Sophie Turner sporting Galvin, Jimmy Choo and Forevermark:

rs_634x1024-150920163927-634.sophie-turner-emmy-awards-2015-092015

Perhaps I’m a tad biased as I am absolutely obsessed with the woman, but someone else who championed the carpet is Sophie Turner. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful starlets to emerge in recent years, Sophie is statuesque and has a regal air about her, which is why she is one of the few who could pull of this look. The pop of the brilliant blue top offsets her red hair with ease and the Forevermark necklace is a spectacular finish. She is breathtaking.

GettyImages-489366288_master.nocrop.w445.h670

Emma Roberts in Jenny Packham with Martin Katz jewels:

GettyImages-489367944_master.nocrop.w445.h670

Old Hollywood Glamour at its finest, Emma is releasing her inner vixen here and I am loving it! Always one to have the smoulder and pout down, Emma has added oomph to her look with sultry, wavy hair and that plunging neckline. If there’s anything that makes me a tiny bit unsure about this dress it’s that I think I would also like to see it in a different colour (red perhaps), but asides from that and in the colour that it is now, she looks marvellous.

Emma-Roberts

Zoe Kazan in Miu Miu:

slide_453142_6072706_compressed

I can already tell that this will be one of the controversial choices of the post, but quite frankly – I don’t care. A demure beauty, Zoe is a relatively unknown starlet, even though she has a lucrative career. That is why I think that this dress is perfect for her. Nominated last night, Zoe turned up in a stunning number, yet still didn’t overdo it as so many other did (keep your eyes of for my worst post later today). She look elegant and quirky, which I think defines her as an actress. Finally, the side-swept bob was another chic yet understated part of her look and it finished it with ease.

Zoe Kazan2

Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell:

rs_634x1024-150920170556-634-lady-gaga-emmy-awards.ls.921015

Dressed in a gown designed by her stylist, Gaga is looking as classy as we’ve ever seen her. This new look is perfect for the star and shows yet another facet to the talented singer/actress. I really appreciate that she donned this gown as she is showing support for her stylist who just released his first ever line at New York Fashion Week. Solidarity in this case has lead to a solid, sublime look.

Laverne Cox in Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa and Fred Leighton jewellery:

GettyImages-489361084_master.nocrop.w472.h670

Can we please take a collective moment and just take in how ravishing Laverne Cox is looking here? Always pretty, Laverne has now turned up the sex appeal to boot! Her body is en pointe and that blue is sublime against her skin-tone. Simple yet sexy – nice work!

slide_453142_6072738_compressed

Jaimie Alexander in Armani Privé:

GettyImages-489359962_master.nocrop.w445.h670

Very different and very chic! This look is certainly a stand out. With a sleek, futuristic vibe, Jaimie is drawing us all in and keeping our attention with the sultry look in her eyes. Modern, edgy and fabulous – this is a great look. Although, I have to say that I wasn’t too keen on her making out with her husband on the carpet – you’re married, keep that for home love…

Amanda Peet in Michael Kors with a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch:

Amanda Peet2

This dress was exquisite on the red carpet. Here, Amanda has been styled perfectly and everything in this look is superb – which is why she made my list of course! One thing that I do have to say though is, that although everything is stunning, Amanda doesn’t quite look comfortable on the carpet. Next time Amanda, make sure to wear the dress and to not let it wear you – great look though!

January Jones in Ulyana Sergeenko paired with Tiffancy & Co.:

GettyImages-489368262_master.nocrop.w442.h670

Jumping to the forefront (see what I did there?) is January Jones in a ravishing green jumpsuit (just in case you didn’t…).

January looks absolutely beautiful here and this is a true example of how you can relate something seen as more casual to a high fashion event. The green complements her skin tone and fair features seamlessly and this is a look which oozes confidence. Well done January!

Niecy Nash carrying a Swarovski clutch:

Niecy Nash 2

This ‘Scream Queens’ star had me screaming with delight when I saw her on the carpet! This is the definition of a dress which fits to your curves. Looking absolutely sensational Niecy’s waist nails and embellished gown all add up to a magnificent ensemble. A bit booby? Perhaps – but hey, if you’ve got them – flaunt them!

Julia Lewis-Dreyfus in Safiyaa paird with Chopard jewels and a Roger Vivier clutch:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Finishing off my list of gorgeous gowns is Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The comedy royal’s look was timeless and elegant. This is one of those times where women realise that it’s OK to be simple and chic. Is this something that we’ve never seen before? No. But is is something that I want to see again? Most definitely yes! What Julia is showing here is that if you take off the bells and whistles and just let tailoring and sophistication do the talking then you’re onto a winner.

Although, dresses and jumpsuits stole the show, I just want to leave you guys with a few pictures of my favourite suits of the night:

Met Gala Fashions 2015: The Worst.

As you will have read in my Best Dressed post, this year’s Met Gala was full of fanciful fashions and was certainly an amazing night for fashion too! Unfortunately however, there were those major, major, major, flops which were just inexcusable. Although they were shocking to the eye and very difficult to look at, they should make for an interesting post for you – so let’s get underway with the worst dressed of the Met Gala 2015.

Julie Macklowe:

Julie Macklowe

I don’t even know who this woman is, but between the cheap looking material, that God awful hair and the ugly pattern, this is the definition of a hot mess. Julie, whoever you are – you need to get a stylist!

Kris Jenner in Balmain:

slide_423004_5430292_compressed

Taking a leaf from her daughters’ books, Kris has sported Balmain, to her detriment. We all know that Kris tries to grab the limelight by any means necessary and this time it did not work to her avail. John Travolta hair, Egyptian earrings, a horrid dress and those pointy (I use that as a negative in this case) shoes all add to a look which would be better off set to the torch… Better look next time Kris!

slide_423004_5430426_compressed

Dylan Lauren:

Dylan Lauren

You’d think that the daughter of world renowned fashion designer Ralph Lauren would have good taste wouldn’t you? Well I guess you were proven wrong. This is an absolute disaster! This look is so eclectic, so cheap and so, so tacky. I honestly wouldn’t even let my little sister wear this for Halloween – the first time seeing it is scary enough! Everything here is wrong. The tulle skirt is hideous, the top is way too tight, that necklace looks like it’s the property of a 4 year old and then she finished it off with day-time Tv presenter hair. At least Julie stuck with the theme…

Lady Gaga in Balenciaga by Alexander Wang:

slide_423004_5431814_compressed

This look just isn’t flattering. Although sticking to the silhouette of ancient Chinese queens, this is too wide for her body and makes her look portly. That in addition to unflattering make-up and the super large sleeves/train all add to swamping Gaga and making her look silly. Not my favourite.

Jamie Bochert:

jamie-bochert-met-gala-2015-best-dressed

Jamie, who has modeled with Kendall Jenner for Givenchy looks like a cross between Frank N Further from The Rocky Horror Show, a cocaine addict and a prostitute… maybe that’s the look that she was going for? Whatever it is, it’s disgraceful.

Katy Perry in Moschino:

katy-perry-met-gala-2015

Katy Perry looked a royal mess. As is a theme through this post, I don’t have anything positive to say. I know that Moschino is a very out-there designer, but honestly this look just appears thrown together to me and was only made worse when he accompanied her on the carpet. Very disappointed indeed.

slide_423004_5430764_compressed

Grimes in Louis Vuitton:

grimes-met-gala-2015-best-dressed

Another D-list celebrity who should have stayed at home is singer Grimes. I understand that artists have a style and that sometimes they dress for their look as opposed to the event in mind, but this really just doesn’t fit the bill. I honestly find lazy looks like this to be disrespectful. You’re at the Met Gala and the theme is, “China: Through The Looking Glass.” Come on!

Grace Coddington:

slide_423004_5430190_compressed

Wow this is bad! For those of you who don’t know, Grace is the creative director of American Vogue. Personally, I love Grace from what I’ve seen of her in The September Issue. Unfortunately, that can not make up for the disaster that this ensemble is. It literally looks like she remembered the Gala twenty minutes beforehand and rocked up in her pajamas. She doesn’t have eyebrows drawn on and it looks like she hasn’t even gotten her roots done for goodness sake!

Coco Brandolini D’adda:

coco-brandolini-dadda-met-gala-2015-s

A supposed fashionista, Coco is yet another trainwreck. I appreciate that she stuck to the theme, but that is literally the only positive that I can think of. This dress does nothing for Coco, neither style-wise or flattering-wise. I am astounded as to why she chose it.

Anne Hathaway in Ralph Lauren:

slide_423004_5430236_compressed

Not only can Ralph Lauren not dress his own daughter, he completely misses the mark with A-list celebrities too. Maybe it’s the jedi mind tricks, but in my mind this is very Star Wars. The only compensation with this dress is that it fits like a glove, but there is just no excusing that hood. It’s a complete flop.

Irina Shayk in Atelier Versace:

slide_423004_5430274_compressed

Irina Shayk has horrendous style. We get it, you’re sexy. In fact, she is one of the most beautiful women in the entire world. Why then, does she need to flaunt it so often? Perhaps it’s because she’s turning 30 in less than a year? Or maybe she’s trying to show Cristiano what he’s missing? All I know is that for the sake of us who are interested in fashion, could you please cover up, get some style and mature in your fashion? Trust me, you’ll look so better than this mess and he’ll come running after you again!

Kerry Washington in Prada:

slide_423004_5430288_compressed

Kerry used to be such a stylish woman 2 years ago. I’d love to know what happened…This cheap looking fabric, so so colour and the green shoes are certainly not going to bring it back any time soon.

Selena Gomez in Vera Wang:

slide_423004_5430338_compressed

Looking more failed Spanish senorita than regal Chinese princess, this is not a good look for Selena. If this is anything to go by then I’d dodge Vera Wang when you’re picking your future wedding dress!

slide_423004_5430336_compressed

Chloe Sevigny in JW Anderson:

slide_423004_5430348_compressed

Known for her out-there fashions, Chloe Sevigny is definitely a fashion favourite. I for one, am not a fan however. This to me is so droopy and so frumpy. Even with her cleavage on show and an extremely high slit she still manages to look mundane. Overall I just don’t get her style.

Jennifer Lopez in Atelier Versace:

slide_423004_5431872_compressed

Similar to Irina, JLo is another one who I am sick to death of seeing on the red carpet. She always wears the exact same thing! I’ve said this in the past and I’ll say it again – we know that you’re hot and sexy, but please pump some originality into your wardrobe. Wearing your usual nude illusion skin-tight dress and adding a dragon to the front does not make it appropriate. To top it off, this looked even worse when standing beside the designer:

slide_423004_5432042_compressed

Cara Delevingne in Stella McCartney:

slide_423004_5430814_compressed

This look doesn’t work for 1 main reason – it’s too small. Cara clearly has an outstandingly beautiful body, but this jumpsuit is just too tight for her. The pants section is unflattering on her belly and then it looks as if the top is just pulling it up even higher. Overall the look is quite boring, asides from the tattoos (which I don’t think hit the mark), but the only reason that it’s in the worst dressed is because of the fit.

Chloe Moretz in Chanel:

slide_423004_5430372_compressed

Chloe is a gorgeous young girl, but this look is horrible. Although she has a slim figure, Chloe’s silhouette is very up and down and slightly broad. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that of course, she’s just not dressing for her body type! The choker, the placements of the shoulder straps and her posture all result in her looking quite squat and broad. This would have been much better with different accessories and if the top half wasn’t as tight. Try that next time Chloe!

Olivia Wilde in Prada:

slide_423004_5430808_compressed

Not a good overall day for Prada, this look is appalling! The dress alone isn’t the prettiest, but paired with those gloves and the headpiece, this is a disaster. The colour of the clutch doesn’t even match the gloves. This is a serious accessorizing mishap and everyone who had a part to play should be up for the sack. Such a shame for such a beauty.

Well finally that ordeal is over… Thank you guys for reading this post and I will have many more coming up in the near future! Follow me on facebookinstagram and tumblr to keep 100% up-to-date.

Best Dressed of Met Gala 2015: Through The Looking Glass.

slide_423004_5431900_compressed

Fashion’s most anticipated night of the year, is back and with it is Landofpod. Everyone fashion savvy character knows the insides and outs of the Met Gala and like me, has been waiting very impatiently. For those of you who may be unaware of the night in it, this is an event run by nonetheless, the queen of fashion – Anna Wintour. What really sends the Met Gala into the stratosphere, along with its boastful quantity of stars and fashionistas, is the always amazing and ever-changing theme that comes with it. First and foremost this is a charity for the Costume Institute which along with the themes, enables everyone to take huge fashion risks and to make fashion history – some of which was made last night. From rock to goddesses and punk to superheroes, the theme is always thrilling and this year’s theme, “China: Through The Looking Glass,” certainly did not disappoint. Without further adieu, let’s begin with some of 2015’s most stunning fashions to date.

For the sake of order, I am going to begin with top 3 from last night’s show-stopper. I have to say however, that these 3 looks are all stunning and I cannot justify choosing one over another. All in all, sit back, have a look and enjoy 3 beauties.

BEST DRESSED:

(For those of you looking for my Worst Dressed post just click here).

1) Rihanna in Guo Pei:

rihanna-met-gala-2015-best-dressed

Rihanna looked absolutely stunning in this ravishing Guo Pei dress. Transcendent, this is a look which breaks all fashion boundaries and creates a moment on the red carpet. For something that could have gone so wrong, Rihanna pulled it off to a tee and I honestly think that nobody else could have come close to the perfection which she achieved in this dress.  The rich colour of the dress, the enormous gown, the simply strapped heels and that headpiece all achieve an unparalleled level of exquisiteness. What I absolutely adore about this look is that it is perfect for the occasion. Like I said above, this is an event which enables everyone to release their inner fashionista. What makes it even better is the fact that although she pushed every envelope. This isn’t some cheap, costume attempt to get you noticed, this is fashion – something which many other people confused on the night. All in all, her hair, make-up accessories and the dress lead to Rihanna absolutely killing it.

2) Zendaya in Fausto Puglisi:

slide_423004_5431820_compressed

Another of my top 3, Zendaya joins Rihanna in the ranks of supremacy on this red carpet. At only 18, Zendaya has proven herself a huge force to be dealt with in the realms of fashion and this look is gorgeous. Again, traversing the costume path, this is a look which fully embraces the theme and event. What makes this an undeniable winner however, is the fact that it is perfect for her age. This is cute, it is sexy, it is fresh and above all, it is Zendaya. Full proof that you should dress for you and not for others, Zendaya looks stunning and the train and hairband are just amazing.

slide_423004_5430834_compressed

3) Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in Atelier Versace with Anita Ko jewels:

slide_423004_5430344_compressed

Completely different to the first two ensembles, this is a look which is sleek, sexy and demure. Rosie is the embodiment of elegance and looks utterly perfect. Still remaining true to the theme with the swerves of fabric on the bodice, Rosie looks graceful, reminding me of the dignified beauty of a swan, with the trail of fabric caressing the curve of her neck. This is the type of woman that everyone wants to be.

Continuing from these astounding looks, we stay with the rest of my top looks from the night. Although these ladies didn’t make it into my top 3, they still were absolutely gorgeous so have a look below:

Behati Prinsloo in a Tommy Hilfiger gown with a Judith Leiber Couture clutch:

behati-prinsloo-met-gala-2015

With titles like Victoria’s Secret Angel and Adam Levine’s spouse under her belt, Behati already has a lot to be proud of, and if she keeps dressing like this, ‘fashion icon’ could soon be added to her repertoire. Personally, Tommy Hilfer is not a brand which usually ignites excitement in me, but here Tommy has really hit the mark. The combination of the sexy, sheer panels with the beautiful midnight blue suede and exquisite tailoring is magnificent. On top of the dress, the look is accessorized to perfection. Personally, I am in love with the choker, drop-earrings and that cute yet sexy cat-flicked eyeliner.

Alexa Chung in Erdem:

alexa-chung-met-gala-2015-best-dressed

This look is just so, so chic. Also, what I idolize here is the thoughtful details. The beautiful print of the mulberry bush, which originates from China, paired with the fact that the dress is silk (the product of the worms which live in the bush) is just so brilliant! This is a design which thought behind it and it is just so clever. Like always, Alexa oozes chic and the finishing touches of her hair and the powder blue, grandmother-esque shoes with the ravishing colour of the dress is almost too much to handle. Chic, clever and understated – top marks!

Courtney Eaton in Dolce & Gabanna:

Courtney Eaten

Up and coming Australian actress Courtney Eaton has just landed right on my fashion radar. At only 19 this is such a wow fashion moment for the starlet. A very literal interpretation of the theme, this look is cute, fashion-forward and beautiful all in one. The pale-golden tone of the dress against her bronzed skin-tone is the perfect compliment and her striking face pulls the look together. I am also in love with the head-piece and statement earrings. This look is a lot to pull off, but Courtney did so effortlessly.

Imogen Poots in Alberta Ferretti:

_AG13184

There is something just oh so sexy about this look. The Valentino-esuqe silhouette is stunning with the beautiful lace and sheer paneling all harmonizing in perfect unison. Looking sexy and powerful, Imogen is showing an almost vampire type of beauty yet at the same time I find the dress enchanting. This is a look with could be so blasée, but has avoided that and in the process has really ignited my interest.

imoogen-poots-met-gala-2015

Sienna Miller in Thakoon:

"China: Through The Looking Glass" Costume Institute Benefit Gala - Arrivals

Always a starlet who brings something unique to the carpet, Sienna is one who never disappoints. Proving her fashion icon status, she wows us in this red Thakoon suit. The combination of the red and black with the tassels, huge chest cavity and slightly cropped tuxedo pants all leads to a resounding yes. This looks is chic, appropriate and something which you would only see on a true fashionista. I also love how she brought fringe into the equation – perfect!

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors with an Edie Parker clutch:

kate-hudson-met-gala-2015

Looking nowhere near her 36 years of age, Kate shone in this glittering, molten-golden gown. Kate somehow manages to look regal and like the girl-next-door all in one. Again, I am loving her execution of the look with her hair and make-up being perfect – this was a real winner of a red carpet! Another infatuation of mine is that if you look at the dress up close you actually see that it looks as if each gold piece is individually placed on her body. This is another stunner.

Shu Pei Qin in Tommy Hilfiger:

shu-pei-qin-met-gala-2015-s

Another striking Tommy Hilfiger gown, Chinese model Shu Pei Qin, looks like a princess. The combination of suede with embroidery on the upper half juxtaposed with the flowey nature of the skirt leads to a very simple, yet effective silhouette. Like Sienna Miller (above), Shu is a flat chested girl making the deep v work perfectly. Finished off with her simple hair and make-up, this is a very easy, pretty yet stylish look.

Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein Collection:

kendall-jenner-met-gala-2015-best-dressed

Looking every inch the supermodel, Kendall walked the carpet with ease. This Calvin Klein Collection dress is simple and sexy. Proving that you don’t every bell and whistle, Kendall shows that sleek can be just as effective. Of course the side-boob and lace-detail on the side of the gown is what kicks it up into best dressed territory though. This is a look which could be emulated by many, but pulled-off by few. Kendall looks beautiful.

That’s it for all of my best dressed of the 2015 Met Gala! I will be putting up my worst dressed post soon so please keep an eye out for that. As always, if you liked this post then please like it, comment and/or share it and make sure to follow my facebooktwitter and tumblr accounts!

Oscars 2015: Best Dressed – Landofpod.

The 85th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013.

As you’ve seen from my Worst Dressed post, this year’s Oscars red carpet encompassed a flurry of styles. There was a lot to live up to compared to last year with Lupita’s Cinderella inspired gown, Emma Watson’s grungy Vera Wang ensemble and Kate Hudson’s sexy caplet all knocking it out of the park. From good to bad, slutty to demure and chic to drab, every style was explored on this year’s carpet however, and there were certainly some style winners. I am extremely excited to share my favourite looks with you guys, so without further adieu, here are my best looks from the 2015 Oscars.

Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta with a Christian Louboutin bag and Forevermark jewels:

691

gallery_nrm_1424650539-464156336

Sienna looked absolutely sensational and stole the fashion spotlight for me. Undoubtedly my number one best dressed of the night, Sienna embodies style, class and chic and I could not love this more. What’s amazing about this look for me is that it encompasses so many different aspects which in theory should not work together, but in reality are so beautiful. Velvet, lace, sheer cut-outs, ribbons and bows – I mean if someone described a dress like that to you you would never want to see it, but Sienna and Oscar executed it perfectly. Everything in this dress is perfection and every little detail, such as the stylized lines draping down the front of the dress, effortlessly adds to the overall effect. Sienna’s team then finished her look off with ease with her hair, make-up, Louboutin clutch and Forevermark jewels all exquisite. Well done Sienna – j’adore!

Rosamund Pike in Givenchy with Lorraine Schwartz earrings:

689

Just wow. Another lady who nosed on perfection, Rosamund was a very close second in the runnings. This red Givenchy is to die for. It is so elegant with the upward bust-line and her easy pulled back hair, yet it also has the perfect amount of sex appeal with a thigh high slit and waist defining panels. At first glance, I wasn’t sure if maybe she needed a little more accessorizing, but the more I looked at it I knew that I was wrong. The simplicity of the diamond drop earrings and those thin strapped shoes are the cherry on the cake and Rosamund looks absolutely breathtaking.

slide_402388_5048392_compressed

Eddie Redmayne in Alexander McQueen with a Chopard Watch:

693

Repping it for the men, although not the best poser in the world, Eddie Redmayne looked outstanding for his big night. Throughout the award season, Eddie has made a name for himself as a man who likes to play with fashion and who is very into his clothes – both of which can be seen here. This navy suit is impeccably tailored and the midnight blue works perfectly with his icy blue eyes. What sends this suit to a whole new level however, is the amazing addition of the velvet. And no, not only a velvet lapel, but velvet shoes! Definitely not something seen very often, Eddie has brought something new to the carpet and he genuinely could not have picked a better look to receive his first Oscar in – congratulations Eddie!

Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe in Alexander McQueen:

hannah-bagshawe-eddie-redmayne-oscars-red-carpet-2015

Yes, I know I just spoke about him above, but not only was Eddie my best dressed man of the evening, he was also half of my best dressed couple. Eddie’s wife Hannah has proven herself as quite the fashionista throughout the award season and last night was no exception. I adore this Grecian style gown and the neckpiece, waistband and additional feathers are all perfect. I know that some people are against the feathers at the hip, but I personally love them and think that they make the dress. All of the features combined with her easy hair and the fact that the dress is midnight blue, to match Eddie’s amazing ensemble, results in my unquestionable most stylish couple of the evening.

slide_402388_5048402_compressed

Behati Prinsloo and Adam Levine in Armani Privé:

464153960

Another couple who impressed me were Behati Prinsloo and Adam Levine, for pure sex appeal alone. I’m not 100% on Behati’s dress, but you cannot deny that the sexuality that you see when looking at this pair is through the roof. They just ooze sex appeal and lust and Adam’s suit is absolutely flawless – here’s my second favourite pair of the night!

Jenna Dewan in Zuhair Murad Couture with Stuart Weitzman shoes, Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a Lee Savage clutch:

slide_405070_5049858_compressed

Jenna would not be one that I would usually look out for on the carpet, but wow did she take me by surprise at the Oscars. This Zuhair Murad creation is stunning on the petite beauty. Showing us and others (*coughs* Chrissy Teigen) the perfect amount of sex appeal for this ceremony, Jenna shines with her gorgeous embellishments, somewhat edgy jewels and the pop of colour with her lip which finished this off to a tee. Full marks Jenna!

Meryl Streep in Lanvin with a Salvatore Ferragamo bag and Fred Leighton jewels:

slide_402388_5049448_compressed

Flaunting a stereotypical Meryl look, Ms. Streep looks amazing and this is definitely one of her best looks in the last few years. She looks gorgeous from head to toe with every accessory being en pointe, in particular her earrings, belt and shoes. What this look shows us is that accessories can make or break an outfit and in Meryl’s case the accessorizing was sublime.

slide_404828_5049626_compressed

Chris Evans in head-to-toe Gucci:

slide_404828_5049628_compressed

This was another show-stopping moment for me. Chris is the epitome of a Hollywood class act here and could easily pass for an old Hollywood icon. This Gucci  ensemble is gorgeous and with his classic hairstyle and well-trimmed beard he looks devastatingly handsome.

Cate Blanchett in John Galliano with a Tiffany & Co. necklace:

gallery_nrm_1424651283-464157756

No surprises here as Cate is the definition of style personified, but yes Cate Blanchett is another of my winners. This John Galliano gown is everything with the unrefined shoulders adding a slight touch of boho. Clearly, what gives this look its oomph is that amazing turquoise Tiffany necklace though – divine.

Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein with Chopard earrings:

gallery_nrm_1424650214-464155864

After what I would call a rocky start to the awards season, Lupita came back fighting and once again has triumphed in this white Calvin Klein number. This dress is one which looks simple, yet upon inspection has so many intricate details. Although simple, it is a lot of dress for someone to pull off and Lupita does so flawlessly with her ebony skin creating a gorgeous juxtaposition with the gown.

Reese Witherspoon in Tom Ford with Tiffany & Co. jewels:

slide_402388_5048916_compressed

This is one of those looks which will always be in style. When one attempts to wear a dress as minimal and simplistic as this the execution needs to be exquisite, something which Reese has nailed. The corsetry in this dress is impeccable, showing that a lot of fittings were needed. It all was worth it though with this being the perfect look to finish off Reese’s simple, but stylish award season fashion choices.

That’s it for my best of the best from this year’s Oscars ceremony, but I also have just a few more who almost made the mark that I’d like to discuss with you quickly.

The Almost Best Dressed:

Anna Kendrick in Thakoon with Norman Silverman jewels:

B-e8Fl1CIAAfaF1

This look seemed to get quite a bit of slack for being lack-luster, but I have to say that I really like it. I think that Anna looks gorgeous here and the chain part of the dress, dark eye and messy hair all add a touch of sex appeal. All in all though, I do agree that it needs something more make its way into the best dressed category. I give this look a 7/10.

Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent with a Bally bag:

gallery_nrm_1424648447-464153286

Like Anna’s dress, this is one which is very pretty, but just didn’t quite make it to the top spot. What I do love about this dress, however, is the asymmetric bust-line and corset which are very flattering on Dakota’s tiny frame. The shoulder strap is clearly also to die for and her slightly messy hair with the red lip polish the look off with ease.

Oprah in Vera Wang:

slide_402388_5049380_compressed

I think that Oprah looks marvelous here – she is glowing. Again, this look wasn’t quite a best dressed winner for me, but what I am absolutely in love with is how this fits her body. This is exactly how to wear a dress when you are a bigger lady. This Vera Wang gown hugs Oprah in all of the right places, it shows off everything that it should and the illusion created from the draping is stunning. This is an absolute 10/10 for dressing for your body and I am so happy that someone has finally shown how it is done. Thank you Oprah!

Keira Knightley in Valentino with Chanel accessories:

1424659740_keira-knightly-flashes-baby-bump-at-oscars-2015-1

This dress screams Valentino. The whimsy and ethereal nature of this dress is beautiful and soothing which is why it is the perfect choice for the pregnant Keira. It is so, so pretty and what makes it even better is that it fits is perfectly with Keira’s periodic style which she can be known for. All in all, she manages to radiate the perfect aura for both her and the event.

The Oscars 2015 Red Carpet: The Worst And The Not Quite Right.

The 85th Academy Awards® will air live on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013.

The Oscars is unquestionably the biggest red carpet event of the entire year. With that in mind, it is arguably one of the most stressful award ceremonies for which to pick your outfit: it needs to be chic, stylish, stand-out and meet a certain level of class. Due to this, a lot of people seem to get overwhelmed before the big night resulting in a ridiculous number of blasé, yawn-inducing ensembles… Remember Anne Hathaway’s 2013 Oscar dress? Exactly. This year, the boring basics followed its usual trend with actors such as Jessica Chastain choosing extremely mundane looks. Thankfully, we always have those who try to push the envelope, thus ending on either end of the spectrum. So, to start things off, I’m going to being with my worst dressed attendees of the 87th Annual Oscars Ceremony.

Blanca Blanco:

slide_404828_5047870_compressed

I didn’t know who Blanca Blanco was until last night and my God do I wish I still didn’t know who she is now. What a horribly hideous dress this is. Usually one wears their hair up to let the dress do the talking, but in this case this dress needs to shut up. My only honest criticism is why didn’t somebody help her out by burning it before she put it on?

Gwyneth Paltrow in Ralph & Russo Couture:

slide_402388_5049210_compressed

What was Gwyneth thinking with this? I usually adore Ralph & Russo and as they are a very chic, elegant brand they would be a good choice for a ceremony such as the Oscars. This does not mean that they don’t make mistakes however, with this dress being one of them. The base of the dress is ugly in itself, but the addition of that flimsy rose shoulder detail is just horrendous. If you’re going to go for a boring silhouette with extremely unimaginative design then please Gwyneth, just leave it at that. Adding bells and whistles only makes the dress even worse.

Rachael Harris:

slide_404828_5048594_compressed

Is there any real excuse for this? I don’t think so! Get some God damn contacts Rachael and if not, at least buy a stylish pairs of specs like Meryl…

Diane Warren:

slide_404828_5048570_compressed

Last night being her seventh Oscar nomination, Diane Warren is clearly an immense talent. It’s just a pity that the same can’t be said for her stylist… The hair is what really kills me.

Will.i.am:

slide_405070_5048354_compressed

Bringing some men into the fold, last night was not a shining moment for the male Hollywood scene. Will.i.am is clear proof of that in this train-driver meets baseball team look. You’re at a black tie, red carpet event Will, throwing on a blazer does not take your look from music awards to classy. Give it up!

666

Chrissy Teigen in Zuhair Murad:

chrissy-tiegen-oscars-red-carpet-2015

Another person who clearly thought that they were going to the Grammys is Chrissy Teigen. She undoubtedly looks gorgeous and the colour is perfect for spring, but she is showing off way too much skin for the Oscars. What I’m trying to say is, put the leg away, you’re not shooting for Sports Illustrated tonight…!

Nicole Kidman in Louis Vuitton:

slide_402388_5049176_compressed

I am so disappointed in Nicole Kidman’s Oscars dress. When the words Nicole Kidman and red carpet come to mind it’s automatically an exciting mix and something which I usually can’t wait for. At this year’s Oscars however, I was extremely let down. The dress, the hair, the make-up, the bag, the accessories – everything is so dull, so tedious and so tiresome. Where is the spark and where is the flare of style? I certainly can’t see them. Teamed up with her husband’s girly locks, they add up to my worst dressed couple of the 2015 Oscars ceremony!

slide_404828_5049374_compressed

Jared Leto in Givenchy with a Fred Leighton brooch and a Cartier watch:

slide_402388_5049284_compressed

Many people out there seemed to love this look, but I for one hated it. Firstly, we have the powder blue colour which might be in season right now, but doesn’t do it for me here. I also dislike the shirt. I think that the suit jacket and closed up shirt matched with his Jesus-style hair and full beard leads to a whole lot of problems. Basically, it completely swallows him, and suffocates his upper body – he has no neck in this whatsoever and it makes his upper half look squat. Finally, the biggest crime here is his shoes. The combination of the short pant and those optic white shoes is a catastrophe. All in all, it’s not going to go down in the hall of fame as one of the worst Oscar looks, but I am extremely disappointed in Jared.

Ansel Elgort in Prada:

slide_404828_5048442_compressed

Another man who failed to impress me was Ansel Egort and here’s why: I know that Ansel is young and that I always preach about dressing for your age, but in my opinion Ansel needs to grow up a little in his style. He is only 20, but he is still a man whereas here he looks like a little boy. The tux is not tailored properly to his body, his dickie bow is crooked and he’s still sporting a 15 year old boy haircut. I get that his fan base is quite young, but if Ansel wants to start getting some more mature, adult roles then he needs to begin by showing that he can look like one in person. Ansel, your first step is to ditch the oversized suit and get a fresh new haircut, I promise you that it will do you wonders!

Margot Robbie in Saint Laurent with Van Cleef & Arpels jewels:

770

This is a look that I have seen some bloggers rave about, but for me it does the exact opposite of Ansel’s look above. This is so ageing on the star. Let’s all remember that Margot is only 24. This dress could be easily be seen on someone 15 years older than her and still been seen as a bit mature. The only youthful part of it is the low cut in the front, but even that is ruined by the chain which also reads old to me. Perhaps if she had done a twist on the Jennifer Aniston chest-chain which Jen has been sporting recently it would have added some much need youth into the equation? I get that Margot is trying to become a style icon, but this heavy black gown is not the way to get there.

Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa:

202215-cc-red-carpet-Karolina Kurkova

Gwyneth Paltrow 2.0, Karolina dons another tight, wrinkly pale pink gown which misses the mark. Let’s face it, this dress is as bland as a tray of hospital food. The dress is boring, her hair is boring and her make-up is boring. To add to the casualties, the fabric is wrinkly, it puckers in places and her toes sneaking out at the bottom are really creepy. This dress is one for the bin.

Felicity Jones in Alexander McQueen:

gallery_nrm_1424649193-464154206

I am so disappointed in this look. In fact, I have been hugely disappointed in Felicity’s overall style for the red carpet season. An undoubted talent, Felicity finally had her break-out role this year and this was her time to seize her moment. Instead however, she has faded into the background of every carpet that she has walked thus far. On top of that, the bottom part of the dress is hideous. I almost wish that she wore her Vanity Fair afterparty dress to the actual event, it had much more drama and was actually something interesting – I think that it would have been a far better choice:

main.original.585x0

Rita Ora in Marchesa:

slide_404828_5048728_compressed

This isn’t the worst dress of the night, but there is also nothing that I like about it. The gold appliqué doesn’t do anything for me and without it the dress is yawn-inducing. Another bore.

Lorelei Linklater in Gabriela Cadena:

664

Saving you one of the worst for last, Lorelei Linklater sunk her Oscars red carpet debut. The mash-up of three different dresses into one is just not a good idea and what’s even worse is that, I wouldn’t have liked one of those dresses even by themselves! Tragic.

That’s it for my worst of the night (thank God), but have a look at some of my not quite there looks below:

Looks Which Failed To Hit The Nail On The Head:

Julianne Moore in Custom Chanel:

gallery_nrm_1424650593-464156560

This is so difficult for me. I love Julianne and I love her style, I just don’t love this dress. Honestly, I don’t think that the background helps as it denies her body definition, but the nail in the coffin for this look is the band of embellishment below her waist. Do yourself a favour and just pace your thumb over the middle embellishment on the screen… infinitely better!

Josh Hutcherson in Ermenegildo Zegna Couture with Christian Louboutin shoes:

slide_402388_5048090_compressed

Josh naturally has a somewhat squat physique. What I think would have helped him to make the best of his body would be if he pulled in both his sleeves and pants just that little bit more. If both were a slight bit tighter and the pants were a little shorter then I think that he would look a lot better on the carpet. I do like that he went for a classic look however.

Anna Faris in Zuhair Murad Couture with Judith Leiber clutch:

slide_402388_5049102_compressed

OK, so this look was never going to be a best dressed winner, but I do genuinely think that if Anna had slicked her hair back into a simple up-do that it could be really pretty. It is a beautiful dress, I just think that if she slicked back her hair and deleted some of the train it would elevate the look to a whole new level.

Jennifer Lopez in Elie Saab with Neil Lane jewels:

slide_402388_5049178_compressed

Another princess gown which hit the carpet. This dress is beautiful. It has whimsy, it has elegance and I love the nude tone with Jennifer’s skin. What I don’t love is the deep plunging neckline. We get it, you’re gorgeous and you have great boobs, we don’t need to see them at every red carpet. Personally, I just think that if you’re going to put in the effort to finally wear some clothes and go for a full ballgown look, then you need to commit, not be half slutty, half princess. Also, it’s not like she was planning on being demure later in the night, she wore a completely sheer Zuhair Murad to the afterparty! Just once, try and keep the girls tucked away a bit Jen.

Emma Stone in Elie Saab with Christian Louboutin shoes and Tiffany & Co. jewels:

slide_402388_5049308_compressed

This is another look which is tough for me. Emma is one of my ultimate style crushes and she definitely looks beautiful. What I’m not sure about here though is the colour. Normally Emma’s porcelain skin can pull off even the more daring of colours, but this one just doesn’t sit right. I think that maybe if the colour was stronger it would be nicer? It’s just a bit too similar to her own tone for me and because of that it doesn’t work. Also, it may be sacrilege to say this about Louboutins, but I hate the shoes.

Jamie Chung in Yanina Couture:

slide_404828_5047874_compressed

This dress shows promise, but also has some issues. The first is that the bottom half is too full. I think that if she took off one layer of mesh or just lowered the volume of the final layer then it would be much more effortless. Also, the pattern is a bit too literal ‘4th of July’ for me. The little firework explosions are all a bit carnival. I do think that the top half of the dress is gorgeous on her though and is something unique which could definitely work in a different context.

Marion Cotillard in Dior Couture:

673

Another ‘close, but no cigar’ ensemble. This is fresh, different and something which nobody else could have pulled off. What’s in question here is: did Marion actually pull it off? Although interesting, I think that the back might be a bit too odd and as it was in the same colour as the front, when you looked at her straight on she had no shape. One thing that is so important on the red carpet is highlighting your body and that’s something which Marion did not quite manage, thus hers is an iffy look for me.

So there you have all of my commentary for the worst and oh so close looks of the 2015 Oscars Red Carpet! Please let me know if you agree or disagree by liking, commenting on or sharing the post and make sure to keep your eye on my facebook and twitter for updates on my Best Dressed which WILL be up later this evening.

Thanks for reading guys.
